Payment of New Value

How is the payout of the value of your items determined at Nationale-Nederlanden? The main rule is that you are reimbursed for the new value for items no older than ten years. For items older than ten years, you are compensated for the replacement value—the amount sufficient to buy comparable items. You are also reimbursed for the replacement value for:

  • Unused items that are stored or second-hand items;
  • Damage to your moped, trailer, caravan, or boat;
  • Rented items.

What Is Not Insured?

Not all forms or causes of damage are eligible for compensation from Nationale-Nederlanden’s home contents insurance. This includes:

  • Intentional damage or negligence to prevent damage;
  • Damage as a result of an earthquake or flood;
  • Construction errors;
  • Poor or insufficient maintenance or gradual damage;
  • Damage as a result of illegal activities;
  • Damage caused by falling or bumping (unless you have taken out the all-risk home contents insurance, in which case this damage is covered);
  • Loss of your belongings, for example, because you have lost something;
  • Mobile electronics, such as damage to your smartphone, laptop, or tablet, are not included as standard. You can take out additional coverage for this.

Deductible

At Nationale-Nederlanden, the deductible is optional. You can choose between a €0 or €100 deductible. With a higher deductible, you pay a lower monthly premium but pay the first €100 of any claim yourself.
