Comparing travel insurances

If you decide to take out travel insurance, it’s important to compare different policies. You want your insurance to match the type of trip you’re taking and align with your personal preferences. Various providers offer basic packages, along with a range of additional cover options. What should you consider when comparing travel insurance?

Coverage Area

Which country are you traveling to? Depending on your destination, you can choose insurance with either European or worldwide coverage.

Short-term and continuous travel insurance

How long are you going on a trip for? And are you planning on taking multiple trips this year? You can take out short-term travel insurance for the duration of your trip; the insurance is effective only from the first day until the last day of your trip. You can take out a continuous travel insurance policy when you often go on longer trips and possibly make short trips in between. With this insurance, you are insured throughout the entire year.

Additional coverages

In addition to basic packages, insurers often also offer additional cover options. These include winter sports coverage, cancellation insurance, or coverage for when you go on a long trip.

Deductible

Be aware that travel insurance sometimes includes a deductible. This is the amount you will have to pay yourself in the event of a claim. You can often choose the amount you would like to set as your deductible, and you can often reduce this amount to €0. The higher the amount of your agreed deductible, the more discount you receive on your monthly premium. For travel insurance, a deductible often applies to a number of items within the basic coverage. This includes, among others, medical expenses, damage you have caused to your holiday accommodation, and damage, theft, or loss of your luggage. The amount of the deductible varies by insurer, but is generally between €50 and €100.

When should I take out travel insurance?

You should take out travel insurance before you leave for your trip. Typically, this can be done up to 1 day before departure. This is different with a cancellation insurance. Often, you must take out cancellation insurance within 1 to 2 weeks after booking your trip. Note that different insurers handle this differently. Therefore, always read the insurer’s terms and conditions carefully before booking your trip and before taking out insurance.
