How can I apply for a healthcare allowance?
You can apply for a healthcare allowance via the mijn Toeslagen page on the website of de Belastingdienst. Sadly, the page is only available in Dutch. So, you either have to ask someone who is fluent in Dutch to help you, or you can call the Tax Information Line. They will make an appointment for you at the tax office to help you with your application.
If you wish to apply, a citizen service number (burgerservicenummer, or bsn) is required.
How much healthcare allowance am I entitled to?
It depends on your income and your situation at home. With our tool – located at the top of this page – you can easily calculate how much allowance you are entitled to.
Does my student finance count as income?
Student finance is not counted as income to determine your total income. The income used to calculate healthcare allowance is your gross income. You can find this on your latest tax return or your salary slip. The income of your parents does not count if you are living at home.
Is there a deadline to apply for healthcare allowance?
No, there is not a deadline to apply for healthcare allowance. You can apply for it all year round. You only have to apply for it once. After doing that, you will receive the allowance until you are not entitled to receiving healthcare allowance anymore. Every year, the Tax Administration reviews whether you are still entitled to receive allowance.
Is it possible to apply for Healthcare Allowance Retroactively?
Yes, this is possible. Every year, until september you can claim an allowance retroactively for the previous year. So, until September 1st 2024 you can claim an allowance retroactively for 2023. Only if you have been granted an extension by the Tax Administration to file your income tax does the extension date apply as the deadline.
I received the wrong amount of healthcare allowance
Contact the Tax Administration (de Belastingdienst) if you think you received the wrong amount of healthcare allowance.
What changes do I have to submit to the Tax Administration?
You should notify the Tax Administration when:
- you get married or move in together with your partner;
- you and your partner (with whom you are living or to whom you are married) are separating;
- you are moving or working abroad.
What happens if something turns out to be incorrect afterwards?
The Tax Administration reviews yearly how much allowance you were entitled too in the previous year. You will receive a letter from the Tax Administration if you happen to have received too little or too much allowance. This states whether you need to repay any money or might receive additional funds.
Does your healthcare allowance change automatically?
No, your healthcare allowance does not change automatically when your personal situation or income changes. You have to notify these yourself. You can expect a correction from the Tax Administration when they find out your situation has changed. If you’ve been a student and have now started working, it is wise to report this immediately. Otherwise, you can expect a bill a few months later stating that you must repay the allowance you received for the past months.
On what dates do I receive the healthcare allowance?
The healthcare allowance is paid out by the Tax Administration on the 20th of each month. The allowance will be paid out on a different day when the 20th is on a weekend or national holiday. Is the 20th on a weekend? You will receive the allowance the Monday after. Is the 20th on a national holiday? You will receive the allowance on the first weekday after.
Family situation
It does not matter for the amount of healthcare allowance whether you still live with your parents or have moved out already. The income of your parents is separate from the assessed income, because it is expected that you pay the healthcare premium yourself. It does not matter either if you live together with your partner. It does matter if you are married or have entered a registered partnership. In that case you are each other’s (healthcare) benefit partners.
How quickly do I receive the allowance after applying for it?
Eight weeks after your application you will be notified by the Tax Administration of the amount of healthcare allowance you are entitled to. The healthcare allowance will be paid out within the period of those 8 weeks. It is advised to check the details on the notice. You receive the allowance a month before the premium needs to be paid. For example, you receive the allowance for the month of July on June 20th.
Final calculation
In the final calculation it is stated whether the amount of healthcare insurance you received, corresponded with your income. The Tax Administration will determine whether you have received too much or too little allowance based on this final calculation.
It is advised to thoroughly check the details of the final calculation. It is likely that you will have to repay or are entitled to receive additional funds.
